Club HistoryCastlefields Crown Green Bowling Club has a impressive record both as a Club and individuals and we as Crown Green Bowlers do not give ourselves the credit we rightly deserve. The aim of this site is not only to promote the Club and players at Castlefields but also to promote the game of Crown Green Bowling. Crown green bowling has been played in Queen street from the early 1930s, The team played under the name of All Saints as the Trustees who owned the property was the All Saints Church. At the end of the 1938 bowling season the Trustees gave the County Council the first option to buy the Land, Building and Premises known as All Saints Castle Fields and District Recreation Ground. This is the description used by the trustees in a letter to the council setting out the properties and grounds. The recreation ground is approached from Queen Street, Castle Fields, and is in a delightful position, nicely planted and laid out. It comprises two crown greens (each 40 yds square), four grass tennis courts, and a children's play field. Attached to each bowling green is a wooden pavilion and the tennis courts have one pavilion. There are women's and men's lavatories on the ground connected to the main sewer. It was also pointed out that this was the only recreation ground in this populous district available for organized games and that the opportunity to secure this well laid-out ground and open space for the price mentioned should not be missed. It is not much different today and it could be that these sparse facilities are the key to the success of Castlefields throughout the years. At the end of the 1938 Bowling season the Council took up the offer and the sum of £520 (purchase price £500, legal expenses £20) exchanged hands and the Recreation Ground was bought. A further £100 was spent on patching of the bowling greens and the tennis courts which required some attention before the sports facilities could be made available for use by the public. The green is recognized as being one of the hardest to play on in the County of Shropshire and has been the venue for many hard fought matches over the years, the fields have not lost a home league match in over 25 years. We have areas on the green known as: the cliffs, pooley hole, toboggan run and the M1, all great names that go to make up a great green and gives it a bit of character. We now have improved lighting on both greens and with a new sprinkler system installed, the green is in first class condition, thanks must go to the green keeper, the Baron and Ernie.Within Castlefields area there is adequate car parking space to accommodate all members and visitors. The club has vacancies for new members whether they be beginners or experienced bowlers. Membership fees are very competitive ranging from £13 for full playing membership, Juniors, and Senior Citizens at only £7 per annum. Match fees, inclusive of meal and drinks are just £1-50.The green is open to members during the bowling season, and there is no charge for use of the green for members. Non-members not involved in matches against the home club are charged a nominal green fee.
