Semi-Final of the County Cup played at Chester Road Whitchurch

Castlefields V Wrockwardine Wood

On Friday night both these teams met on a dress rehearsal for tonight's game at Wrockwardine in the Shropshire Premier League where the fields scored a sensational 11-3 away win but this was short lived because in bowls you are only as good as your last game & the Wrockites proved this tonight by knocking out the current County Champions by 16 chalks 238 - 222
R.Goddard 21 19 D.Downs
G.Herbert 21 18 R.Jones
P.Williams 21 18 A.Guat
W.Phillips 20 21 M.Williams
Game1.jpg (26468 bytes) Game4.jpg (18036 bytes) Game2.jpg (20738 bytes) Game3.jpg (19703 bytes)

With Captain Tony Poole away celebrating his 60th birthday it was up to Vice Captain Andy Duckett to set the fields off on what looked to be a certain victory with just the formalities of playing to make sure.  From last nights changed order of play we seen a back to normal first four with Richie Goddard taking the first game 21/19 against D.Downs this was followed by a "unhappy with the way I am playing" Glyn Herbert who struggled on this short green but was always in front and never in danger managed to win 21/18 against R.Jones. Flipper Paul Williams once he found the weight to keep the jack on the green managed to pip A.Guat 21/18 & at number four Wayne Phillips played a good mark down the left hand side but just lost out at 20/21 against M.Williams. 3/1 up & by 7chalks...

K.Walton 20 21 M.Oliver
G.Wainwright 20 21 S.Falconer
Callum Wraight 6 21 P.Clee
A.Peach 20 21 P.Jones
Game5.jpg (21135 bytes) Game6.jpg (18457 bytes) Game7.jpg (22863 bytes) Game8.jpg (21426 bytes)

Keith Walton came on at number five with the support growing from both sides & played a good game but just lost at 20/21 against M.Oliver, George Wainwright followed Keith & soon adjusted to the funny green with some tight bowls against S.Falconer but came out with the same score at 20/21. Young Callum Wraight quickly found his land rushing to 5/0 up then P.Clee got the jack scored 2 then Callum won one more to 6/1 then never saw the jack again,  Phil just took him into the corners with some long leads, scoring sevens twos to run out 21/6 against Callum in just 17 ends, and at number eight the Maggot Alan Peach playing great bowls against P.Jones had some hard luck to lose 20/21, this made the score 10 chalks up to the Wrockites and was sensed by the crowd that a possible upset could be on the cards....

G.Rogers 10 21 M.Oliver
A.Duckett 20 21 R.Crofts
L.Clarke 21 17 J.Clarke
K.Jones 21 20 M.Hinton
Game9.jpg (20364 bytes) Game10.jpg (16870 bytes) Game11.jpg (23517 bytes) Game12.jpg (19149 bytes)

Graham Rogers at nine found the supporters growing louder & louder, specially from the Wood camp which when M.Oliver won a couple rubs and his bowl fell in where Graham fell out, just when you need a bit of luck, it deserted him losing out 10/21, Andy Duckett felt the same but he managed to pull his score to 20/21 against R.Crofts but by this time the game had slipped away & it was the Wrockites who

Captain Tony Poole will need to use all of is skill to rally round this team for the Alan Mayhew Trophy on Wednesday, its not nice when you are dumped out of the one competition the team really thought they would win, on reflection may be Callum should have waited for a not so important game to be bloodied or even played in the first four to throw a game like teams do to the fielders, more experienced players who have played in the Premier last season were standing on the side of the green who maybe, should of played, but that's life, its always easy after the event or from standing on the sides... JACK UP

County Cup

Played at the Old Shrewsbury Bowling Club on Wed 20th  June

Castlefields V Ford Bowling Club

Castlefields Won by 24

At last we had a bit of sun for this match played on Old Shrewsbury Bowling Club, many of the large crowd had come to see if the Ford lads could cause an major upset by turning over the Castlefields team, Ford who always bring a large following was egged on by these supporters for whenever a Ford player bowled a good bowl you heard the support & there were plenty of good bowls played tonight.

In the first four led by  Captain Dave Hoffman, who knows this green from his younger days in the Shropshire Juniors Teams, Chunkey played at great game against Glyn Herbert winning 21/5, Wayne Phillips kept the crowd on edge when after a slow start clawed his way back against Nick Davies winning 21/17,  Richie Goddard played some serious bowls against Andy Jones who was the crowds favorite but Richie took no notice running out 21/12, & at number four Paul Williams, using all of this large green showed how the corners should be played winning 21/8 against Gary Middleton.

Glyn Herbert 5 21 Dave Hoffman Keith Walton 21 3 Andy Gale
Wayne Phillips 21 17 Nick Davies Mark Rogers 21 20 Mal Roberts
Rich Goddard 21 12 Andy Jones

Alan Peach

18 21 Paul Middleton
Paul Williams 21 8 Gary Middleton Graham Rogers 21 16 Bill Tarrell

Into the middle with Keith Walton showed Andy Gale how to run on castlefields gas by winning 21/3, this was nearly spoilt when George Wainwright bowled his first wood short, across the front of Keith but luckily a long measure was called & Keith than bowled to win the end after the measure, Mark Rogers was taken on all the longer marks but once sorted out the land found it to his liking & came back to snatch the win 21/20 against Mal Roberts, Alan Peach did not have enough in his DIY bag to answer a fired up Paul Middleton who must of walked up every bowl  encouraging the extra inches. it must work because to the delight of the crowd Migee won 18 against Alan, at number eight Graham Rogers made it a hard game against Bill Tarrell after both bowlers played some tight bowls, it was a real nip & tuck with Graham finally winning 21/16,

G Wainwright 21 17 Nigel Bound Andy Duckett 16 21 Gavin Price
Barry Keep 16 21 Geoff Davies Kevin Jones 20 21 Phil Price

Into the final four with the match still fairly open with George Wainwraight getting the length & weight & playing a good game against Nigel Bound winning 21/17, Andy Duckett had little to answer Tantrum Price  who played to the crowd and won Andy 21/16, Barry Keep played all his tricks but could not pull this one out of his hat going down 16/21 against Geoff Davies & into the final pair saw Phil Price storm off 7/1 & 13/5 against Kevin Jones before Juggler started to get some back, bowling hard against the rub & the crowd to pull to 20 across but just dipped out 20/21

Team Captain Tony Poole rallied his team during an uneasy period in about the third quarter of the match when Ford started to pull some back & the crowd sensed a glimmer of hope, but being 30 down against the fields was a bit to tall an order even with the great support from the sides the depth of strength in the Castlefields team kept them ahead finally winning by 24..

Callum adds another trophy to is growing collection of silverware, he played well in the final against young Kieran Walker who started five up & would have liked to take Callum all around the sides of the green but Callum had other ideas & kept him at a longer mark, sometimes though, a bit to long which allowed Kieran to come back at him which made it a good match to watch,

At the presentation Alan Peach thanked Sue & Helen for running the canteen, Tony Poole for supplying and presenting the prizes and then we all thanked Alan for an excellent barbeque.

Match report & photos courtesy of Shropshire Star & Malcolm Fletcher...

County president Mike Hinton didn't know whether to laugh or cry after Shropshire's stunning county championship victory over Yorkshire.

For within an hour of seeing his troops achieve something they unfortunately could not do in the 1998 Crosfield Cup final, Hinton was left reflecting that a great success may now count for little.

A 21 chalk win over the mighty White Rose county should have had the whole Shropshire bowling fraternity rejoicing - but the celebrations soon went a bit flat as news filtered through of another triumph for Cheshire.

They defeated Shropshire by 42 in their section two opener - and on Sunday they added a 93 chalk mauling of Warwick & Worcester to emerge as red hot favourites to take the one ticket in the semi-finals come August.

It would need a turn-round of miraculous proportions to deny Cheshire - a Yorkshire win over them by 70 next month combined with a Shropshire success over W & W by 90 - but that should not be allowed to detract from a memorable day for Hinton's men.

The president had put everything into beating Yorkshire - gambling on using the vast expanse of Severnside No 1 for the home leg and breaking up the established mould of the home and away teams of recent years.

It paid off thanks to another superb performance by the travelling troops in Huddersfield and a marvellous recovery in front of a huge crowd at home in Shrewsbury.

"I'm very proud of all the players, home and away, that they have beaten Yorkshire in my time," said a chuffed Hinton.

"I'm delighted we won and that the gamble, and it was a gamble using Severnside, paid off. We are still in there fighting and you never know what might happen in this great game of ours."

Shropshire's hopes of beating Yorkshire looked poor early on Sunday as away captain Barry Keep pulled out of the away game through illness - and his former Castlefields team-mate Alan Davies failed to turn up to catch the bus.

The Davies situation will be discussed by the selectors when they meet on Thursday to pick the teams to face W & W on July 1 - but Keith Walton stepped back in at No 2 with great success.

He and Castlefields clubmates Glyn Herbert and Rich Goddard proved Shrewsbury bowlers can travel in style, all winning to give Shropshire the dream start of being 16 up off four.

Reigning county Merit champ John Breeze, Clay Flattley (whose Bayley colleague Spencer Clarke took Keep's spot) and the impressive Peter Farmer added further wins to make it six winners apiece and limit Yorkshire to just a six shot advantage at Crosland.

At Severnside Yorkshire's two aces - All England champ Graeme Wilson and record-breaking Bob Hitchen - both won in the first four, but Shropshire were only five down.

And once Wayne Phillips came off a 21-10 winner it was all one way traffic, Adrian Rowe and Ian Gaut battling manfully to lift Shropshire two up after the middle four.

Then came the action that really got the crowd buzzing with the fit-again Derek Wright racing 14-2 up as he won, Colin Beaman going 13-4 ahead as he won and Keith Wall winning 21-12 from 11-10 down.

It was a day to cherish - and Hinton will, whatever.

Emlyn Jones has proved he's still the best player in the re-named Shropshire League - even at the age of 74.

And his answer to the understandable aches and pains after playing so many matches in the heat was a hot bath - but not before he had checked that his club were not short for their Wem League game at Castlefields!  "I feel okay now but I had to make sure Pontesbury were not short for the match. If they had have been I would have played again," said a delighted Jones.

A well-respected competitions man, Jones had proved his prowess by winning the Bowring Open just last year and he qualified for the final stages of this year's league Merit with three wins at GWR early on Monday. His first victim in the last 16 at Perkins in the Wassall Windows and Shades Decorators-backed Merit was Rich Taylor (Telepost) 21-12.

He then beat Andy Gale (Ford) 21-20 in a thriller to reach the semi-finals where Phil Whatmough, the Castlefields winner of two Handicaps last year, awaited.  Still there was no sign of tiredness from Jones as he raced well ahead and survived a late rally by Whatmough to win 21-18.

Home man Dave Pugh was his final opponent and, after Jones had roared 5-1 up, it was nip and tuck all the way. But from 19 across Jones called on his experience to run out and land the £125 first prize - all the support the Perkins members could muster for Pugh counting for little.

Full scores from the later stages of the finals at Perkins: Quarter-finals - Jones 21, Gale 20; Sean Bould (Telepost) 21, Doris Jones (Telepost) 11; Whatmough 21, Barry Williams (Greenfields) 15; Pugh (Perkins) 21, Kevin Price (Castlefields) 19.

Semis - Jones 21, Whatmough 18; Pugh 21, Bould 14.

Final - Jones 21, Pugh 19.

Castlefields fail at the last hurdle

Sponsored by SUTTON WINSON (Insurance Brokers), providers of specialist insurance for Bowling Clubs, this event sees 16 Club teams playing to win the BCGBA Club Championship.

In a close final of the Club Championship, Castlefields just lost out to a very good side from Middleport Park (Stoke-on Trent), having won the three previous matches Castlefields were hot favorites to take the Cup but Middleport Park had other ideas and after the first four the fields were nine chalks up, but the second half in full sunlight and a noisy crowd the Middleport Park clawed back the extra points to win the match on aggregate,  even though the fields had five winners, Middleport Park  won by nine points, which on the day was enough.
