County CupPlayed at the Old Shrewsbury Bowling Club on Wed 20th June Castlefields V Ford Bowling ClubCastlefields Won by 24 At last we had a bit of sun for this match played on Old Shrewsbury Bowling Club, many of the large crowd had come to see if the Ford lads could cause an major upset by turning over the Castlefields team, Ford who always bring a large following was egged on by these supporters for whenever a Ford player bowled a good bowl you heard the support & there were plenty of good bowls played tonight. In the first four led by Captain Dave Hoffman, who knows this green from his younger days in the Shropshire Juniors Teams, Chunkey played at great game against Glyn Herbert winning 21/5, Wayne Phillips kept the crowd on edge when after a slow start clawed his way back against Nick Davies winning 21/17, Richie Goddard played some serious bowls against Andy Jones who was the crowds favorite but Richie took no notice running out 21/12, & at number four Paul Williams, using all of this large green showed how the corners should be played winning 21/8 against Gary Middleton.

Callum adds another trophy to is growing collection of silverware, he played well in the final against young Kieran Walker who started five up & would have liked to take Callum all around the sides of the green but Callum had other ideas & kept him at a longer mark, sometimes though, a bit to long which allowed Kieran to come back at him which made it a good match to watch,
At the presentation Alan Peach thanked Sue & Helen for running the canteen, Tony Poole for supplying and presenting the prizes and then we all thanked Alan for an excellent barbeque.
Held at Severnside Bowling Club with the winners going on to qualify, we also
have in the finals, Richie Goddard & Callum Wraight who qualified at Ford.

Shropshire Verses Yorkshire 3rd June 2001 |
County president Mike Hinton didn't know whether to laugh or
cry after Shropshire's
stunning county championship victory over Yorkshire.
For within an hour of seeing his troops achieve something they unfortunately could not do in the 1998 Crosfield Cup final, Hinton was left reflecting that a great success may now count for little.
A 21 chalk win over the mighty White Rose county should have had the whole Shropshire bowling fraternity rejoicing - but the celebrations soon went a bit flat as news filtered through of another triumph for Cheshire.
They defeated Shropshire by 42 in their section two opener - and on Sunday they added a 93 chalk mauling of Warwick & Worcester to emerge as red hot favourites to take the one ticket in the semi-finals come August.
It would need a turn-round of miraculous proportions to deny Cheshire - a Yorkshire win over them by 70 next month combined with a Shropshire success over W & W by 90 - but that should not be allowed to detract from a memorable day for Hinton's men.
The president had put everything into beating Yorkshire - gambling on using the vast expanse of Severnside No 1 for the home leg and breaking up the established mould of the home and away teams of recent years.
It paid off thanks to another superb performance by the travelling troops in Huddersfield and a marvellous recovery in front of a huge crowd at home in Shrewsbury.
"I'm very proud of all the players, home and away, that they have beaten Yorkshire in my time," said a chuffed Hinton.
"I'm delighted we won and that the gamble, and it was a gamble using Severnside, paid off. We are still in there fighting and you never know what might happen in this great game of ours."
Shropshire's hopes of beating Yorkshire looked poor early on Sunday as away captain Barry Keep pulled out of the away game through illness - and his former Castlefields team-mate Alan Davies failed to turn up to catch the bus.
The Davies situation will be discussed by the selectors when they meet on Thursday to pick the teams to face W & W on July 1 - but Keith Walton stepped back in at No 2 with great success.
He
and Castlefields clubmates Glyn Herbert and Rich Goddard proved Shrewsbury
bowlers can travel in style, all winning to give Shropshire the dream start of
being 16 up off four.
Reigning county Merit champ John Breeze, Clay Flattley (whose Bayley colleague Spencer Clarke took Keep's spot) and the impressive Peter Farmer added further wins to make it six winners apiece and limit Yorkshire to just a six shot advantage at Crosland.
At Severnside Yorkshire's two aces - All England champ Graeme Wilson and record-breaking Bob Hitchen - both won in the first four, but Shropshire were only five down.
And once Wayne Phillips came off a 21-10 winner it was all one way traffic, Adrian Rowe and Ian Gaut battling manfully to lift Shropshire two up after the middle four.
Then came the action that really got the crowd buzzing with the fit-again Derek Wright racing 14-2 up as he won, Colin Beaman going 13-4 ahead as he won and Keith Wall winning 21-12 from 11-10 down.
It was a day to cherish - and Hinton will, whatever.

Shropshire Lost by 53 |
Sponsored by SUTTON WINSON (Insurance Brokers), providers of specialist insurance for Bowling Clubs, this event sees 16 Club teams playing to win the BCGBA Club Championship. In a close final of the Club Championship, Castlefields just lost out to a very good side from Middleport Park (Stoke-on Trent), having won the three previous matches Castlefields were hot favorites to take the Cup but Middleport Park had other ideas and after the first four the fields were nine chalks up, but the second half in full sunlight and a noisy crowd the Middleport Park clawed back the extra points to win the match on aggregate, even though the fields had five winners, Middleport Park won by nine points, which on the day was enough.
