In the first semifinal Dave Peach from Castlefields took on the young Michael Beer from the Battlefield Club & while Dave played some good bowls, Michael did not play as well as he can & found some of Dave's marks just to good losing out to 21/9.

In the other semi Craig Wilson from Bicton BC & Jesse James of Craven Arms proved to be a much tighter game with Craig justifying is number one spot in the Inter League by  just winning the game at 21/20.

Moving into the final Dave Peach proved to strong for Craig on the night, assisted with plenty of support from Dave's friends from Castlefields Bowling Club, he played a tight game all across the green & while Craig had a run in the middle of the game Peach held is nerve & ran out a worthy winner at 21/17.

Splashing success for Duckett

New Castlefields captain Andrew Duckett scored a rain-lashed triumph in the second Severnside Open.

Duckett - and 119 other bowlers - braved the gale-whipped storms to pick up the main cheque with a 21-18 victory over Pontesbury's Alan Potter in the final of the mixed handicap singles.

In the semi-finals Duckett beat Birmingham's Colin Weaver 21-20 while Potter saw off Mick Jones (Meole Brace) 21-16.

The consolation KO went to James Grimston (Donnington Wood) who beat Shaun Feeney (Castlefields) 21-10.

Beaten semi-finalists were W Hand (Llanrhaeadr) and T Moore (Grasshoppers).

The last of the three mixed singles is on Sunday 3rd Mar, and once again it's full - with names already on a reserve list.

The 2001 Champagne Cup Final

Castlefields V Perkins Sentinel

In this final of the Champagne Cup brings together two teams that have had contrasting seasons, Castlefields have found life difficult in Division One but have used this Cup campaign as a safety valve to let off steam.  They survived a very tight game in the first round against the Crescent but have gone on in leaps & bounds since. They also had a narrow escape in tha rain affected semi-final before pulling through to win by 13.  By contrast, Perkins Sentinel have had a superb season running away with the League and with three players at the top of the aggregates, it just goes to show their domination.  They have had the easier passage through to this final tonight and will relish their appearance in the spotlight having been together for many years, indeed some can call on the old Harlescott days together.

Team Captains Mike Thomas & Steve Flynn shake hands before the start of the Final..

Scott Newland 11 21 Roger France
Paul Walker 21 17 Andy Bound
Mike Thomas 21 17 Mark Hill
Mick Pritchard 21 8 Vince Knight
Scott Newland V Roger France Paul Walker V Andy Bound Mark Hill V Mike Thomas match4.jpg (17249 bytes)

After a disappointed venue both teams turned up as did a large crowd which filled the car park & surrounding roads.  Dressed in their new tops supplied by J.Rogers & Sons, young Scott Newland led Castlefields on this large crown green which was not to his liking & got dumped 11/21 against Roger France, Paul Walker & Andy Bound played some good bowls which pumped up the crowd to what turned out to be a good evening of support & sportsmanship, Dogger finally won 21/17, Captain Mike Thomas found some ridges & played them slightly better than Mark Hill winning 17 & at number four we saw the left handed, Mick Pritchard who now loves this green, turning over Vince Knight with a great 21/8 win....

Pete Walker 17 21 Ken Stuart
Arron Peach 21 14 Sue Hill
Callum Wraight 21 17 Mark Price
Kevin Price 21 9 Steve Flynn
   match5.jpg (17117 bytes) match6.jpg (13193 bytes) match7.jpg (13730 bytes) match8.jpg (15261 bytes)

Number five saw Chairman Pete Walker giving Ken Stuart a run for if money but still lost out 17/21,  Arron Peach had a long game against Sue Hill & in the end it was his short marks which won him a nice 21/14. Callum Wraight followed him on against Mark (sparky) Price & after a great game from both bowlers, Callum won 21/17. & at number eight the almost a Premier League player Kevin Price took their Captain Steve Flynn to the cleaners winning 21/9...

Allan Rogers(jnr) 14 21 John Griffiths
Tony Parry 21 20 Stuart Ward
Rob Jones 5 21 Derek Jones
Chris Kelly 17 21 Stewart Smale
match9.jpg (11495 bytes) match10.jpg (11682 bytes) match11.jpg (12389 bytes)  Who would think that this young lady as not marked a card before..

Number nine saw big Al Rogers lose out to John Griffiths 14 & at ten we saw the best game of the evening with Tony Parry winning Stuart Ward at 21/20 with tight bowls & plenty of support, Perkins sensed that they could pull this one out of the bag when the game could of gone either way, at eleven Rob Jones added fuel to their fire after playing a nightmare on this difficult green against Derek Jones & lost out 5/21, Last on saw Ned Kelly just losing 17/21 against Stewart Smale but it was just enough to ease out the Perkins lads...

Some of the large crowd waiting for the Captain to fill the Cup.. President Tony Gibbons thanks all bowlers, supporters, markers & Fred Morrell, finishing with thanks to Preston Brockhurst BC.. Tracy Wraight collects a raffle prize AGAIN..

In the end Castlefields won by 4 chalks, Tony Gibbons thanked all players, supporters, referee Fred Morrell, the markers & of course the Preston Brockhurst Bowling Club, he also apologized for Steve Lloyd from Tanners Wines who could not make the match and thanked Dave Card for presenting the Trophies to the winning Captains.

Captain Steve Flynn collects the runners-up award from Dave Card... Team Captain Tapper Thomas collects the Champagne Cup from Dave Card..
